Ukraine WOW opens in Kyiv: Oscars, BAFTA, UEFA Cup, Narbut’s Alphabet, the 1919 Unification Carriage, and much more

Ukraine WOW, an interactive exhibition,  has opened at Kyiv’s Central Railway Station. Its goal is to immerse visitors in Ukraine’s heritage and historical continuity — the roots that give us strength to create the future. The exhibition will run in the capital until November 9 inclusive, and tickets are available exclusively online at Concert.ua.

Ukraine WOW consists of 5 thematic blocks: Land, Warriors, Thinkers, Artists, and Heirs.

It features over 100 exhibits and dozens of interactive zones, including:

  • Ivan Mazepa’s saber, a sword from Kyivan Rus times, Cossack cups, and a hetman’s mace;

  • Original early prints that mention Ukraine — from Beauplan (1651) to Marshall (1772);

  • The historic railway carriage where the preliminary Act of Unification between the UPR and WUPR was signed in 1919;

  • Replicas of the Golden Pectoral and the Peresopnytsia Gospel;

  • A 20-meter Cossack boat (chaika);

  • Iconic Ukrainian WOW moments from the years of independence, including Andriy Shevchenko’s Ballon d’Or, Eurovision trophies won by Ruslana, Jamala, and Kalush Orchestra, a Pulitzer Prize, a BAFTA award for the film Rock, Paper, Scissors starring Oleksandr Rudynskyi, a FROLOV dress designed for Sabrina Carpenter’s performance, and a Ruslan Baginskiy hat created for Madonna’s world tour;

  • VR experiences that allow visitors to fly over the Carpathians, Bakota, and the pink lakes of Syvash, or step onto the stage of MUR’s new musical Rebellion;

  • A recreation of Polina Raiko’s house and a 7 meter set from the play, The Witch of Konotop.

Yulia Solovey

and Yaroslava Gres

“Ukraine WOW first opened at the railway station in 2019 and became the most visited exhibition in the history of independent Ukraine. In just 3.5 months, it was seen by 333,000 people — and was only closed because of the COVID pandemic. For 6 long years, we waited for the chance to reimagine and reopen the project,” say Yaroslava Gres and Julia Solovey, the founders of Ukraine WOW.

“Not every Ukrainian family can boast a large material inheritance. Sometimes it’s just a few objects left from our grandparents — the rest scattered by wars, revolutions, terror, and displacement. That’s why our shared heritage is so important. It belongs to everyone, because spiritual values grow stronger the more people share them.

We want every visitor to feel connected to the great Ukrainians of the past — and proud that, despite the full-scale war, there are still so many modern WOWs. We’ve realized that ‘wow’ is a shared noun — something each of us creates.”

The exhibition is curated and produced by the Ukraine WOW NGO and Gres Todorchuk agency, made possible thanks to the support of Ukrainian businesses.

Key partners: Avrora, ROZETKA, Visa.

Project partners: InterChem, Darnytsia Pharmaceutical Company, Everstake, Bolt.

The exhibition is created in partnership with Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways).

Exhibits were provided by museums and private collectors, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, and the project was implemented with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

The expert team includes Valeriy Pekar (business school lecturer), Anton Drobovych (philosopher), Oleksii Sokyrko(historian), and Kseniia Malykh (curator).

Over 300 people contributed to the creation of the exhibition.

“We all possess incredible treasures of our shared heritage. Russian propaganda tried for years to reduce it to a few folk songs, dumplings, and embroidered trousers — and at times it almost succeeded,” says Valeriy Pekar, exhibition co-curator.

“But our heritage grew through concrete and ruins. Today we are reclaiming our history — and returning to it. Independent Ukraine is only 34 years old, yet the continuity of our culture spans millennia. And the greater the continuity, the greater the value. We are a young nation of an ancient land — not guardians of a frozen museum, but a living, dynamic community creating the future right now, drawing on the immense legacy of rulers and poets, warriors and philosophers, inventors and entrepreneurs.

Ukraine WOW speaks about the complex in a light and accessible way — and I hope it will inspire hundreds of thousands of people.”

Exhibits were provided by museums and private collectors. From every ticket sold, ₴50 will be donated to support:

  • the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine,

  • the Museum of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine,

  • the National Museum of Natural History,

  • the Cherkasy City Archaeological Museum of Middle Dnipro Region,

  • the National Museum of the History of Ukraine,

  • and the Chernihiv Regional Historical Museum named after V. V. Tarnovskyi.
